Vintech > 1176 > RME AIO

Put the 1176 into bypass mode. Set the 1176 input and output knobs so they point straight up (should around position 5 I think). Set the Vintech preamp to a good gain posotion for your source material. If you crank up that red knob you can saturate the transformer for a different tone. Adjust the gain to sound however you like. Then adjust eq if needed. next pick the compression ratio you want to use on the 1176. For me, 4:1 works for a lot of stuff with the 1176 but that's just me. The input knob will effect gain reduction. Switch the 1176 meter to respond to gain reduction and then adjust the input gain knob until you get a good amount of gain reduction (I'm assuming you are familiar with how to set the attack and release knobs). Once you're happy with the amount of gain reduction... switch the meter so that it responds to the compressor output level and adjust the output gain knob until you get a good level. There's probably other ways to approach it but that's the way I did it. I was never able to get the Vintech and the UA 6176 to work together without getting a ground loop though so i eventually sold the Vintech but I do miss it. Had a really great tone.

Someone already posted but I think you missed the importance of this. Take the 1176 out of the loop for a minute. Mic into Vintech into converter. Get the sound of the preamp where you like it most and also the level to about -10dbfs in the software. This is a good starting point. Now patch the 1176 in. Use the input to drive the comp. More input is similare to bringing down the threshold. Once you have the compessor sounding the way you want, adjust the output to at or around -10dbfs again. Have fun!
